SSA is committed to providing good officials. US Youth Soccer maintains the principles of FIFA Laws and modifies them for youth levels. The referees have been trained and tested by Kansas Referee Development in conjunction with USSF and FIFA. These ladies and gentlemen have made a considerable investment of time and resources in order to be able to officiate for SSA. For many of them this is their first job! If you want to be a referee click on the Kansas referee link below.

News From the Referee Administrator

  • Your referee administrator is Carrie Ogonowski.  PLEASE DO NOT E-MAIL HER WITH CHANGES IN YOUR AVAILABILITY.  IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO REFEREE A SCHEDULED MATCH, PLEASE CALL THE REFEREE HOTLINE ON WEDNESDAY.  THE REFEREE HOTLINE IS 233-5800.  THANKS FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS MATTER!!
  • Click here for the latest requirements on USSF Referee Grades.
  • Remember referees, that you must check player passes for every match.  Don’t just take the cards from coaches and believe that is enough.  In the past, players have played for teams they do not belong to.  This is against the rules, if not done properly.  The SSA Board has passed a policy that all player cards must be checked, and that means reading off every player’s name and looking at their picture before they are checked in for that match.  This is not a difficult task for a referee, so please be certain you are doing it.
  • Also, read your FIFA "Laws of the Game" book every Friday night before your matches that weekend.  It will help you when you need to make quick decisions.  Remember to be checked in with a field marshal before your scheduled match at least 30 minutes before the match is to begin to get teams checked in and player passes checked, even for recreational soccer.

Reminders for Referees

  • Please bring water with you to re-hydrate.
  • Referee checks may be picked up at the field the first and third weekends of the month or at the Soccer Office.  Picking up your check is a great postage reducer for Sunflower Soccer.
  • Please come to your games looking sharply dressed in the appropriate uniform with your shirt tucked in and your socks pulled up.
  • Remember, this is a job! SSA is paying you, so please stay up with the play. You will get fewer disagreements from coaches and spectators when you are right there to call the play.  And remember to be respectful of coaches, players and fans.
  • Stay tuned to www.kansasreferee.org for updates on Kansas’ referees.
